So you know how booktok seems to be hyping a book, everybody is talking about it and everybody loves it well, that would describe this book. I got Emily Henry’s Book Lovers ages ago because the premise seemed interesting but then I forgot about it until booktok started pushing it and I decided to read it after seeing the 1000th TikTok about it.
I was really skeptical about reading it because EH’s other books just fell flat for me but the first chapter of this book got my attention and held it tight.
We are introduced to Nora, a Book agent who is always involved in an all too familiar trope of “small town romance”. If you don’t know what that trope is, well it’s when someone who usually lives in a place like New York, Los Angeles, Lagos and then has to temporarily move to a small town like Ekpoma in Edo state probably to close a deal because they are always a big, Christmas hating, happiness loathing, always dressed in suits or heels wearing business person (and I mean 99.9% of the time). Another thing that almost always happens in this trope is that they have a partner who is just as vain and “evil” as they are and this is who Nora is.
Nora has been in 3 relationships where her partners have moved to small towns and fallen in love with a farmer girl 😂😂. In fact when the book opens, she’s being broken up with again! I really liked this take because I like seeing the “Villian’s” side to every story, they are usually more interesting and less vanilla than the good guys but I digress. Nora’s sister (who I don’t like but understand) then makes them go to a small town for holiday and writes a list to make sure her sister has a small town romance.
The book was cute but it was also more, it had unexpected depth and tried to explain everything, ensure the romance was fully developed, even the third act break up seemed very sensible. However because EH tried to make sure all the bases were covered, it made the book feel like it was going on forever before all the angst was sorted and all the secrets were out. I had this same issue with EH’s Beach Read but I found that one boring. I was also sure I had read Book Lovers already cause her book covers are so darn similar 😑.
Anyway, I really enjoyed the pleasant surprise that was Book Lovers. What is better than a reader reading two readers fall in reading love in a reading trope!🥹🥹🥹 (if you don’t get it, forget about it). if you have read Book Lovers, let me know what you think! If you haven’t read, do so and then let me know what you think .
I'm reading this book now and I have fallen asleep every time after like five pages. Urgh.
You forgot the six figure salary part🥴
